Cron Jobs #
Cron jobs are primarily used on web servers to execute repetitive operations at scheduled times. They automate tasks such as clearing unnecessary files, sending periodic emails like newsletters, flushing the website application’s cache to display the most recent content, running routine maintenance checks, creating backups of websites or databases, and reindexing and refreshing product and client information. Cron jobs are especially recommended for systems that operate continuously like servers.
Crontab #
Cron jobs utilize a file called crontab, which contains the commands executed by the cron daemon — a background process on server that runs commands at scheduled intervals.
The crontab (cron table) specifies when and how frequently a task should be executed. Its syntax consists of five fields defining the timing of execution and one field specifying the command to be run.

Scheduling cron jobs #
To set up a cron job, we typically need to use a command-line interface (CLI) tool. Most web hosting providers offer a GUI for setting up cron jobs, but if we have direct server access, using the CLI is usually more powerful and direct.
The syntax for setting up a cron job can vary depending on the operating system and server setup. However, the basic format typically includes a schedule for when the task should run (using the * * * * *
notation, with each asterisk representing a different time interval) and the command that should be executed when the task runs.
For example, to schedule a task to run every day at midnight, the cron job command might look like this:
0 0 * * * /usr/bin/php /path/to/update.php
This command runs the PHP script located at /path/to/update.php
every day at midnight using the PHP command-line interpreter.
